Staying Home From School

Right now, as I type, I have a 4 year old laying in bed because she will be staying home from school today. She has come down with the strep throat. The poor little kid has to be stuck with me all day, doing nothing but eating pizza and watching TV. I don’t know how she will ever manage.

Sick days are the absolute best for kids. Sure, they may be under the weather, but they’re resilient. There is no doubt in my mind that they’re are dancing on the inside because they get to stay home. No teachers, no work, no Obama lunch, no paying attention, no worries or cares at all.

When I was a kid, I LOVED staying home from school. I would try to get away with it as much as possible. I was so good at missing school that I got put into a home bound program. They would send the teacher to me! Only twice a week! I loved being “sick”. I got into that program because of my heart condition and scoliosis but I took advantage of it. I slept in, I played video games, I ate whatever I wanted, and I could play outside ALL DAY, as long as my work was done. When you only have school for 4 hours a week, your work is always done.

I don’t feel sorry for my daughter because she is staying home from school. I’m enjoying having her here as much as she’s enjoying being here. She asked me yesterday if she was getting to stay home again and I saw that smile when I told her yes. She thinks she’s slick. When you get old enough to read this, Sophia, I saw that!

The best part about today is, Sophie doesn’t act sick but is obligated to act sick because she is home. That means I get to curl up under a blanket and watch cartoons with her all day and she can’t do anything about it. If she tries to go watch TV by herself, I’ll make up some excuse like, “You’re sick so I have to monitor you and check for fever so you have to stay here with me”.

I do feel bad about my baby’s strep throat, I wish I could take that away. So far she hasn’t really let it bother her, we got her into the doctor pretty early so hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and make her throat feel better. For now, I’m going to go snuggle up with the baby of the family because she won’t let me unless she is sick.

My throat is starting to itch… CRAP!
